Van Driver: Sue Worboys

Name: Sue Worboys
Age: 33
Occupation: Van Driver
Employer: Warners (Midlands) Plc
Qualifications: Secondary education

How long have you been working in your current role?

I started at Warners in June 2003. Initially I was working within the factory on the mailing line, but soon felt restrained by having to work inside all the time on a shift pattern.

Which company do you work for and what do they do?

It is a family owned printing business that has an annual turnover of 25 million pounds. It prints magazines, brochures and leaflets for the holiday sector, specialist puruit and hobbyist markets.

What does your job involve in a typical day?

My day starts with checking over the vehicle, checking my load and paperwork. Depending on the work, I will drive anywhere in the UK to make the deliveries. Deliveries can be anything from a small envelope to 4 pallets of brochures. I return to base and plan my route for the next day.

How did you get into your current job, and what were you doing before?

A chance arose in November 2003 to transfer to the transport department as a van driver, so I took the opportunity and haven't looked back since.

What qualifications did you need for the job?

Apart from my experience, a clean driving license and bags of enthusiasm.

What do you like most about your job?

The varied starting times, the different locations we deliver to and meeting a variety of different people. I also enjoy the freedom of being away from the factory and being my own boss out on the road.

What do you see as your next step?

I have already progressed onto driving a 7.5 tonne lorry. Recently, I obtained my LGV provisional license and undertook an assessment drive to enable me to progress onto learning to drive an LGV Class C.
